When digitized and systematically organized, archival cartographic sources provide valuable insights into the evolution of urban form and constitute a reliable basis for heritage conservation and evidence-based urban planning. The dataset comprises archival maps of Sumy dating from 1845 to 1909, covering the period from the mid-19th to the early 20th century. The materials were obtained at the authors’ request from the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning of the Sumy City Council (Sumy, Ukraine). A methodology for georeferencing archival maps of Sumy city in a GIS environment was developed and validated. For this purpose, the free and open-source QGIS Desktop 3.44.11 software was used. The procedure employed the Google Hybrid basemap, projected in the Pseudo-Mercator coordinate system (EPSG:3857), based on the WGS 84 global geodetic reference system; first-order affine transformation; cubic resampling; and a network of ground control points (GCPs). This approach ensured the spatial compatibility of the archival cartographic materials with contemporary geospatial data and topographic and geodetic reference information. The resulting dataset enables consistent analysis of the spatial evolution and morphological transformation of the urban landscape of Sumy city from the mid-19th to the early 20th century.","citation:dsDescriptionDate":"2026-08-22"},"software":[{"citation:softwareName":"QGIS Desktop","citation:softwareVersion":"3.44.11"},{"citation:softwareName":"Microsoft Windows 11","citation:softwareVersion":"10.0.26200"},{"citation:softwareName":"Microsoft Photos","citation:softwareVersion":"2025"},{"citation:softwareName":"Microsoft Excel","citation:softwareVersion":"2602"}],"subject":["Computer and Information Science","Engineering"],"citation:notesText":"The research dataset comprises archival maps in JPEG format, along with a CSV file providing the associated metadata (number, year, and total number of GCPs).
